WHAT`S HAPPENING AT THE CLUB Updated on: Sunday 23rd February 2005
Our club nights are very varied at the moment. Our Canadian (Wynder) layout and our Swiss (Irrgarten) layout are both in use by members enjoying the pleasure of running the trains. Other members are busy with various aspects of construction on our new ‘00' layout Duchalford. DUCHALFORD (00 Scottish themed layout): Several members are working on a variety of projects on this layout. We are now conscious of the deadline to have this model complete and fully operational for exhibiting at Model Rail Scotland 2006, which will be held in the SECC Glasgow during the last weekend of February 2006. Ballasting of the main line tracks has begun using an in-house designed spreader made from a tin can. The temporary electrical wiring has been tidied a lot and many of the inter-baseboard multi pin connectors have now been fitted. The latter has been a priority job as we wish to move the layout to another area of the clubroom. This cannot be done until we can separate the baseboards both physically and electrically. Construction of the concrete road over bridges is in progress and a couple more factory buildings have been completed. Work on the automation of the upper level suburban tracks has been proving more difficult than anticipated. Constant reviews of the circuitry are being made with slow but positive progress. It is, however, eating into the project development time more than it should. Our work plan includes: Electrical wiring, building construction, DCC installation and experimentation, scenic work, ballasting, track realignment, overhead wire construction and installation and the construction of bridges and roadways. If you would like to participate in any of those activities (with help if you need it) we would be delighted to welcome you to one of our club nights. (Tuesday or Friday in Glasgow Central station – contact Douglas at d.boyle3@ukonline.co.uk WYNDER (HO Canadian layout): This is operational and members frequently run a train or two around the circuit each club night. The layout will be on show at our open night April 5 together with our other three layouts. See our home page for details. KIRKDUNNIE (O Gauge British layout): Although operational, except the fiddle yard, there has not been much activity seen on this layout for some time. Perhaps once a month someone will run one of the trains up the line and back. IRRGARTEN (HO Swiss layout): This layout is also in full operation and is frequently the main source of entertainment toward the last hour of club nights. This layout with its warren of tunnels (IRRGARTEN is German for MAZE) is a challenge to operate. Ideally we like to see three trains running simultaneously on the single-track line. Two operators man the controls so they must keep on their toes to maintain the service. Visitors to our clubroom are encouraged to take the challenge once they have viewed the layout for a few minutes to figure out the routes of the trains. We enjoy demonstrating layout construction by the 'hands on' approach, so if you are interested in our work please E-mail us for more details. Why not consider visiting us on a club-night first with no obligation.
