GARDEN RAILWAY

By Douglas Boyle

Douglas Boyle`s Garden Railway

Some years ago I saw and bought a big train set displayed in a Blackpool shop window. It was just for a bit of fun, perhaps to run around the base of the Christmas tree in the lounge. Little did I know I was embarking on a fantasy trip of Garden Railways in G-Scale (15mm to 1 foot). The scale is not precise as varying manufacturers use different scales. Predominantly I use Bachmann equipment at 1:20.3, however I do run some ARISTO stock at 1:24. The difference is size not too alarming.

The railway meanders through the flowerbeds and around the lawn in my Paisley home. It has kindled an interest in the outdoors, in garden plants and to some degree in civil engineer. The latter is out of necessity to keep gradients to a minimum.

A minimum of shunting is possible, but in general the old time American trains circle around the 'L' shaped continuous circuit.

I offer an invitation to any interested persons to pass an hour or two on a sunny afternoon to watch the trains go by. If you wish you may drive the trains, or perhaps you would prefer to sit with me and watch as we partake of a coffee in the sunshine. Or, if you come by bus, that could be a beer. Call me for an invitation, my invites are not restricted to members of our club. My number is 01505 812 815. If you do not get an answer I am probably at the foot of the garden watching the trains, please leave a message on the answer service and I will call you back. Better still contact me by E-Mail dboyledboyle@btinternet.com
